Data Visualization Summit 2015

I recently had the chance to attend the iE Group Data Visualization Summit in Boston this week. This summit was located at the Westin Waterfront Hotel in South Boston. In two days, there were multiple intriguing presentations and presenters.

Here is a brief summary of what I learned:

  • All NFL players have an X-Y GPS position tracker between their shoulder pads during the game. The NFL records (and can play back) the positions of each player on both teams for each game each season.
  • Most (if not all) of the presenters use D3.js and/or REACT to chart visuals. Tableau seemed to be the second most used product. Spotfire managed 2 mentions.
  • There were several innovative tools being advertised: One tool which uses regression and stats to find insights, search based reporting and dashboard tool, and custom PhD level tools grouping data together to find relationships
  • One really unique presentation was from Ed from Data Refiner looking at Netflix public movie and TV show data. See the results on his site here: Data Refiner
